With its cheap cover and inexpensive drinks, Vic's draws a loyal, hormonally charged crowd. The pool table, summer beer garden and the sofa chill-out area offer a respite from the hot, smoky dance floor. Depending on the night, DJs will play R&B, pop, soul, reggae or hip-hop.

Capital Theater
Beijing's most prestigious theater, the Capital stages big Chinese productions and the occasional foreign show.

Tianqiao Theater
Features a variety of Beijing-style cabaret acts, such as singing, magic shows, fire- eating and "cross talk." The Tianqiao also stages touring productions of musicals and plays from abroad. When it's not staging variety shows, the Tianqiao hosts overseas productions of musicals and opera.

Universal Theater
It's also called Heaven and Earth Theater. The acrobats here spin plates on bamboo poles, jump through hoops, pile onto bicycles by the dozen and contort into pretzels.

Wansheng Theater
The award winning nightly show by the Beijing Acrobatic Troupe features impressive feats of strength and agility. Performers juggle and tumble while balancing towering beams.

MUSIC ROCK, JAZZ & FOLK
Big Easy
Visiting American blues and jazz musicians play gigs in this club, which looks bike it was lifted from the French Quarter in New Orleans. This feeling is further enhanced by the Big Easy's Cajun food and stiff drinks.

Cross Club
The kind of bar British diplomats frequented in colonial Southeast Asia. Opulent Oriental chic, salon couches draped with fox pelts, a walk-in humidor, cognac, and an abundance of thick candles and antiques. Membership nets access to the basement and third floor-the hoi polloi are relegated to floor two, where a stage hosts live jazz.

Jam House
