The Nanpu and Yangpu Bridges

![]() |
The Nanpu Bridge and the Yangpu Bridge link Pudong to the rest of the Shanghai. These were the first bridges to span the Huangpu River and were catalysts for Pudong's extraordinary development. They were financed by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) loans totalling US$155 million. The Nanpu and Yangpu bridges are running at near capacity---Nanpu averages 120,000 vehicles a day while sister bridge Yangpu handles 100,000 vehicles crossing a day. When the showcase bridges were completed in 1991 and 1993 respectively, they were a source of pride for Shanghai and the whole country. Nanpu Bridge's centre span of 423 metres was by far China's longest cable- stayed bridge--until it was surpassed by Yangpu Bridge with a world record centre span of 602 metres. The world-class bridges represented a significant technological triumph for Shanghai. Nanpu was designed by the Shanghai Municipal Engineering Design Institute, using the Alexander Fraser Bridge in Vancouver as a model. ADB provided technical assistance by bringing an international group of world-class engineers to review it. Chinese engineers learned quickly and designed Yangpu on their own. Largely as a result of improved transport links with the rest of Shanghai--since the ADB-financed bridges, a third bridge, three tunnels (two are one-way) and a subway line have been added Lupu Bridge is the first longest arch bridge in the world . The bridge was completed and put into operation In May 2003 to relieve the traffic crossing Huangpu River. With 2.2 billion yuan (US$ 266 million) in investment, the 3,900-metre-long bridge has broken the world's bridge-building record with a 550-metre-long main arch (of which the main bridge totals 750 metres and its width being 28.75 metres), 40 metres longer than the New Virginia Bridge in the United States. The main arch of Lupu Bridge is made up of 27 sections. The bridge is made of more than 35,000 tons of steel.
Architecture shapes the appearance of a nation's city and it’s international image.
