The earthen xun is one of the oldest wind musical instruments in China. Archaeological studies indicate that some 8,000 years ago, the earthen xun was a hunting weapon. By the Shang (17th-11th century B.C.) under the rule of King Yin, the xun was made exquisitely from stone, bone or ivory. By the Zhou (11th entury-256 B.C.), xun became a special wind instrument in the Chinese concert.
